Dos Fridas

Ishtar Yasin Gutiérrez 2018 Mexico, Costa Rica Spanish with English subtitles 82 minutes

FRIDA KAHLO, MEXICAN POST-REVOLUTIONARY ART, COMMUNIST UTOPIA, THE UNCONSCIOUS

Ishtar Yasin Gutiérrez is a Costa Rican, Iraqi, Chilean filmmaker, writer and actress. She was born in Moscow, within a family of artists. The exile of her parents from Irak and Chile marked the fate of Ishtar. She has worked as a filmmaker and actress in different cities and countries around the world: Costa Rica, Moscow, France, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Damascus, Irak, Lebanon, Chile, Argentina, Nicaragua, Haiti and Mexico. DOS FRIDAS is inspired by a true story: Judith Ferreto lives her last days of life in her house in Costa Rica. The closeness with death leads her to relive her memory, when she was the personal nurse of the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. The film interweaves popular art, exvotos, death imagery, surrealism, and the Twentieth Century artists and thinkers of post-revolutionary Mexico.
